How to Check Whether a Promo Code Works Before You Buy
Simple ways to test a promo code, read its terms and confirm the discount before you pay.
By CouponCrafty Editorial TeamPublished Updated 4 min read
The only reliable test of a promo code is applying it to a real cart. The good news: you can do that without paying, because the discount appears in the order summary before you place the order.
Test it in the cart
- Add the items you actually plan to buy.
- Enter the code in the promo field and apply it.
- Look for a line in the order summary showing the discount.
- If it’s missing, read the error message — it usually tells you why.
Read the terms before you test
Offer terms explain who can use a code and on what. On CouponCrafty, terms appear under “Details” on each offer. Look for minimum spend, excluded brands, customer eligibility and the end date.
What “verified” should mean
A verified label should mean someone actually tested the code on the retailer’s site on a stated date. CouponCrafty only shows a verified badge with that date. Learn more in how we check offers.
If the code fails
- Remove any other promotions — one-code-per-order rules are common.
- Check that you’re signed in if the code is member-only.
- Try another current offer from the same store page.
